I had an unstoppable urge to paint a bunch more victorians today instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing. They're much bigger than the first set - on roughly-A4-sized card. I tried to go for a bit more variety in terms of age and build and class this time to keep things interesting.

Part of the Visual Narrative unit on my Masters course involves creating a sequence that communicates the story of an already very-widely known and frequently adapted narrative. In this case, the story is The Three Little Pigs. Since the story is so well-known it gives us a lot of leeway and opportunity to play with it and change it up.

For my story I've decided to create a wholly unnecessary ramped-up sequel. Years after the events of the previous story, the Brick House Pig has become a successful builder and realter. Everyone in wherever-the-heck-this-story-takes-place knows that his brick houses are the safest way to go and have built a happy thriving little community. One day a new wolf (maybe a descendant of the original Big Bad Wolf) rocks into town and tries his hand at taking over where the original Big Bad Wolf left off. Knowing that huffing and puffing will no longer suffice, and the approach of climbing down the chimney clearly won't work, he has somehow procured himself a tank. The pigs in the town have to work together to stop him before he blows all their houses sky-high and eats them.
The story's ending involves a bit of irony and role-reversal as the pigs have to trick the wolf into leaving the safety of his tank so they can drop a brick on his head and kill him.

Here's some sketchbook stuff, comin up,most of which admittedly is from an earlier story draft that didn't really make sense and didn't go anywhere but still informs the current script. I'll post whatever I've got of the finished narrative (probably a script and some storyboards and a couple finished pages and concepts) once I've done it and turned it in. I'll probably post more sketchbook stuff within the next few days as well, why not.

Hello friends!
So I recently started a on a part-time MA course in Illustration and Sequential Design. As well as the one main project that spans the course's entire two year timetable, there are also a number of considerably shorter units that run alongside it. Here are a couple of things I have produced so far for one of the considerably shorter units, the Visual Narratives unit.
The first was to produce a sequence of images that conveys a surprise. This is my weird response to that:And then there's this short animation, produced in five hours as an introductory piece to a group presentation of a modern cautionary tale. Voice acting is not one of the facets of my professional repertoire, as you will surely discover.
Anyway I'll post more uni stuff once I've actually done more uni stuff. Still early days yet. It's mostly presentations and seminars, written work and mindmaps so far.

Series 4 and 5 of my little dinosaur canvases are finished and that's it! I am done. No more dinosaurs.Series 4 stars Dimetrodon, Dimorphodon, Oviraptor and Diplocaulus.Series 5, here, stars Protoceratops, Spinosaurus, Ichthyosaurus and Dilophosaurus. The dilophosaurus, I was a little disappointed to find out, did not have huge neck frills or spit acid out of its mouth like in Jurassic Park, but was still pretty rad anyway.

In other news, I got started on my submission for The Sketchbook Project 2012. This year, I got Heroes and Villains as my theme. Here's a little sneak preview:

Got some tiny canvases from Dave last week, decided to make some tiny collages last night. It's good to break out of your comfort zone every once in a while to get the creative juices flowing. Each one is just 7cm squared.
New Designers is next week! I will be exhibiting alongside a group of fellow Portsmouth Universrity Illustration graduates from the 6th of July to the 9th. Come by and check us out, if you can! It's gonna be a great show.

Clockwise from top-left we have Pteradactyl, Ankylosaurus (one of my childhood favourites), Triceratops and Plesiosaur. This is the second set I will be selling.
And here we have Kronosaurus, Styracosaurus, Parasaurolophus and - granddaddy of all modern birds - Archaeopteryx! This is set three.

I will keep going until I run out of dinosaurs, or at least until I run out of cool ones. I might be wary of doing too many aquatic ones in future as they require me to break the formula a bit.
I wonder if I could make a living off of just selling cute paintings of dinosaurs. I would if I could.

I set up an Etsy store a little while ago but there's nothing on it yet. A group of us are raising funds to pay for the New Designers expo in London at the moment so most of what I'm making at the moment is going to be sold at local shows. After that's all over I'll put these up on Etsy, along with some other things.

I had so much fun painting those dinosaurs the other day that I decided to paint a whole set of em. I think these would make nice adornments for a child's bedroom wall:

So, yeah, I forgot my camera on day 2, I was busy on day 3 and Blogger was down from day 4 but whatever! My show space is up and I think it looks pretty rad!!

The show is on from June 6 to June 11, 10am-4pm in the University of Portsmouth Eldon Building, Winston Churchill Avenue. Admission is free. Illustration is on the third floor.

Some character designs and concept art for an interpretation of Lewis Carrol's Jabberwocky for a brief set by LittleLoud Digital Entertainment. The brief was actually set months ago but I've only just got them back (I sent off the originals (and I didn't make copies (because I'm an idiot.)))

Connections, connections gift packs, new paintings

My animation is finished. It is called 'Connections' and you can watch it by clicking on these words here. It is, at its base level, a story of a phone call between two young lovers, but it also is about much more than that. I intended to downplay the signifance or individual identity of the characters so as to show the diversity and complexities of the connections and communications between humankind, nature and the universe on a much wider level.
It is what I've been building up to since September, and the final animation is the product of about two months of work. I am immensely proud of it.

At the degree show in June I will be selling these super-extra-limited-edition gift packs to compliment the animation:
Each one contains two unique hand-painted 1-inch pin badges, a flipbook depicting the first and last scenes of the animation (the phonecall bits; the scene just after the intro and the scene just before the end credits) a business card with a frame from the animation printed on it, and twelve small stickers each depicting a tiny snippet of a frame from the animation or from some other miscellaneous piece of unrelated work.
They will probably go for about £6.

I've also been working on a few new paintings, now that work on the animation has ceased and I can finally find the time to do so. A couple of finished ones are here but I have a few more in the pipeline as well.
I'm currently looking into a means to sell paintings online, so watch this space.

Some of the pieces that will make up my finished animation. All the individual elements of each scene are hand-painted, scanned, pieced together in Photoshop and created frame-by-frame to be put in motion later in Premiere. The most efficient method? Not really, no, but it works, and it adds a certain hand-made, rough-around-the-edges quality that goes so well with the way I paint!

Was working on this for a while, as part of a terrifyingly huge brief on the theme of Connectivity and how things relate to one another. It is an 8-metre scroll featuring both a microcosmic and macrocosmic narrative centred around two people and the interpersonal communication between them, as well as wider communcation networks.
I won't post the whole thing (because I can't think of a good way to do that) so here are some highlights:

This is a book that I made. It is called "Man", and it is inspired by The Time Machine by H.G Wells:
The plate on the cover is made of copper, with the text sandblasted on. All the pages are made of card and the visuals made with card and ink. It is a tunnel book which needs to be opened up fully and looked through like a window to be read in its entirety.

The text is taken from Norman and Jeanne MacKenzie's The Time Traveller: The Life of H.G Wells and reads "Man is only temporarily dominant on a planet which is itself doomed." The visuals on each page represent a different era in time, beginning in 1895 and ending with a representation of the Earth in its final days.

"Why Do They Have To Flaunt It?"

This project is called "Why Do They Have To Flaunt It?" and is about the potential causes and consequences of prejudice against young sexual minorities - An issue I feel strongly about.
The pieces are inspired by spot illustrations intended to accompany text.

These five images describe some of the factors (bullying, desire to conform to one's peers, preconceived ideas of gender roles and family values, strict religious teachings, underrepresentation of sexual minorities in schools) that can make a young sexual minority feel that they aren't normal, and make them feel pressured into changing who they are to who they think they should be.
Many homosexual people will force themselves into straight relationships in order to conform, which can be a very sad and lonely existence indeed. :(

These are the first and last images from a 4-image sequence made at the end of the summer to detail Something New that I had done. The sequences depicts the process of me moving out of my parents' house. The composition is deliberately similar in the first and last image in order to emphasise the differences in the setting and overall mood.
My most recent brief dealt with HIV, with the intention of educating young people of its dangers:
